What is NoScript?

The NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox, Flock, Samonkey and others mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source add-on allows JavaScript and Java execution only for trusted domains of your choice.

NoScript’s unique whitelist based pre-emptive script blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even not known yet!) with no loss of functionality…

You can enable JavaScript/Java execution for sites you trust with a simple left-click on the NoScript status bar icon, or using the contextual menu, for easier operation in popup statusbar-less windows.

Free ActiveX components disabling utility for IE

Using ActiveX Compatibility Manager

ActiveX Compatibility Manager is a standalone executable, and it doesn’t require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, just copy the executable file (acm.exe) to any folder you like, and run it.
The main window of acm displays the list of all ActiveX components that are currently available for enabling/disabling. For components that are currently installed on your computer, additional information is also displayed: product name, company name, description, version, filename, and more…
If you want to disable an ActiveX component that doesn’t appear in the list, you can add it to the list by using “Add New Items” option. On the “Add New Items” window, you can type one or more CLSIDs or ProgIDs separated by comma or enter key. For example: if you want to add ADODB.Stream and ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash components to the list: You can simply type their CLSIDs:

{00000566-0000-0010-8000-00AA006D2EA4}
{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

Or alternatively, you type their ProgIDs:

ADODB.Stream, ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash

After clicking ‘Ok’, the components that you typed are added to the ActiveX Compatibility list, and you are allowed to easily disable/enable them.
You can also add new CLSIDs from a text file, by using “Load New Items From File” option. When you use this options, all CLSIDs in the text file are added in disabled state.

Disabling/Enabling Macromedia Flash Player

By default, Flash player is not listed in the ActiveX Compatibility list (unless another program added it), but your can easily add it by following the instructions below:

  1. Select “Add New Items” from the File menu (or press Ctrl+N).
  2. Type the CLSID of Macromedia Flash: {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}
    If flash is installed on your computer, you can also type the ProgID of Flash: ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash
  3. Press Ok, and Flash will be added to the ‘ActiveX Compatibility’ list. After that, you can easily select the Flash item, and then disable/enable it.

Firefox 2.0.0.2 released!

Release Date: February 23, 2007

Following security bugs have been fixed in this release;

  • Embedded nulls in location.hostname confuse same-domain checks
  • Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) SSLv2 buffer overflow
  • XSS and local file access by opening blocked popups
  • Spoofing using custom cursor and CSS3 hotspot
  • Information disclosure through cache collisions
  • Improvements to help protect against Cross-Site Scripting attacks
  • Crashes with evidence of memory corruption (rv:1.8.0.10/1.8.1.2)

Windows vista is supported with some shortcummings;

  • For Vista, it is recommended that Firefox be installed in the default location. If the browser is installed in a non-default location, software updates may fail. You can reinstall the software to the default location or to a non-default location as long as the install folder is named “Mozilla Firefox”. Alternatively, you can start Firefox by right-clicking on its icon and selecting “Run as administrator” from the menu.
  • A Windows Media Player (WMP) plugin is not provided with Windows Vista. As a workaround, in order to view Windows Media content, you can install the WMP Plugin v6.4 for Netscape Navigator.
  • Vista Parental Controls are not completely honored. In particular, file downloads do not honor Vista’s parental control settings. This will be addressed in an upcoming Firefox release.
  • When migrating from Internet Explorer 7 to Firefox, cookies and saved form history are not imported.

Firefox is now available in Beta form for the following languages.

  • Afrikaans (af) – Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Belarusian (be) – Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Georgian (ka) – Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Kurdish (ku) – Windows, Mac, Linux

You can download Firefox in your language and for your operating system from this page.

For Firefox in english language and for windows operating system use this link.

If you are already using Firefox click Help on the menu bar and then select check for updates… and then install it from there. The reason why I am recommending it is that this way the install size is only 744 KB. While if you download the whole package it’ll be about 5.7 MB.
